Karolinska Hospital introduces e-commerce

For three years, Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden, has been working on the introduction of IT support for purchasing and logistics. The programme has focused on the internal processes and on creating shared purchasing routines for the hospital. With Visma Logistics AB, Karolinska Hospital has developed full IT support for purchasing, ordering and internal logistics. Today, about 300 people at the hospital regularly use the application Visma Logistics. The product database in the system currently contains about 60,000 items.
The hospital is now ready for the next phase of the e-commerce project. On Monday 9 November, 1999, modern electronic data interchange (EDI) will replace faxes for sending purchase orders to suppliers. Karolinska Hospital will start on a small scale with two suppliers, Medicarrier and PF-data, but expects to extend the system to more of the hospital's 4,000 suppliers soon. The communication will also be extended to include more EDI participants in compliance with the SFTI (Single Face to Industry) standard.

Karolinska Hospital has an annual purchasing volume of about SEK 700 million, and about 7,000 employees.

Since June 1997, the Visma project in the County Council of Stockholm (Stockholm Lns Landsting) has included all the acute care hospitals. It now covers the hospital district of South Stockholm (Sdra Stockholms Sjukvrdsomrde) as well. When the introduction of Visma Logistics in the County Council of Stockholm is complete, it will have about 1,500 users and will handle a purchasing volume of about SEK 3 billion.
