When creativity and innovation go hand in hand

For Unna Kalliomäki, front-end development is more than code – it’s an art form. Combining creativity, design, and technology, she has found a way to bring her artistic nature into her career, where imagination meets logic in perfect balance.
“I’ve always been drawn to the visual side of things,” Unna shares. “Frontend involves design and an eye for detail; it’s about making things look and feel right.”
Unna first joined Visma as a Summer Trainee, eager to learn and explore the world of software development. Today, she continues her journey as a Software Developer Trainee, working part-time alongside her studies. It’s a balance that requires structure and focus, but one she’s learned to master with intention.
“Balancing work and school has its challenges,” she admits, “but having clear workdays and schooldays helps me stay productive and mentally balanced.”
Freedom to grow and explore
One of the things Unna values most at Visma is the flexibility to evolve, both professionally and personally.
“In this short time, I’ve seen colleagues shift their focus and roles within the company,” she says. “Right now, I’m passionate about frontend development, but if one day I want to explore mobile development, I know the opportunity is there.”
This openness reflects Visma’s culture of empowerment and growth, where employees are encouraged to experiment, learn, and find their own path.
A workplace that embraces individuality
Beyond her role, Unna appreciates being seen and valued for who she truly is.
“It’s been really comforting to see that I’m taken seriously and fully included, even though I’m young, new to the company, a trainee, and a woman in a male-dominated field, and even though I like to wear pink and embrace a very girly style,” she says.
In an industry where women remain underrepresented, Unna’s story stands as a testament to how inclusion can, and should, be lived in practice. At Visma, individuality is not just accepted but celebrated. Here, authenticity is viewed as a strength, and diversity of perspectives is seen as a driver of innovation.
While many tech companies are still striving for gender parity, Visma is proud to have achieved a strong balance – 41% of our employees are women, a figure that continues to grow each year. This balance isn’t accidental; it’s the result of a conscious commitment to create a culture where everyone can thrive, regardless of gender, background, or career stage.
By encouraging open dialogue, fostering mentorship, and offering flexible career paths, Visma ensures that voices like Unna’s are not only heard but also empowered to shape the future of technology.

Passion at work and beyond
Unna’s motivation also comes from her life outside of work, for instance, from Limppu, her energetic eight-month-old dog. But more than that, Unna has discovered something many aspire to find: joy in the work itself.
“I’ve always heard people say that you work so you can do what you love in your free time,” she reflects. “For me, it’s different – my work is what I love. Even in my free time, I’m reading, researching, and learning more because I genuinely want to grow.”
Unna’s story is a reminder that when creativity and innovation go hand in hand, work becomes more than a job – it becomes a fulfilling expression of who you are.
