Navigating the AI era: Why cybersecurity is more crucial than ever

Security, AI

The digital landscape is changing at a breathtaking pace, and artificial intelligence is at the forefront of this transformation. While AI's potential seems limitless, a critical question emerges: how do we ensure our digital world remains secure?

Serving over 2 million businesses across Europe and Latin America, we are deeply committed to cybersecurity. In honor of Security Month, and because security is truly at the heart of everything we do, we're exploring how AI is shaping this new reality. To unlock the benefits of technology like the cloud and AI, you must have unwavering trust in the security of your data.

We sat down with two of our experts, Espen Johansen, our Chief Security Officer, and Andreea Jugarean, our Cybersecurity Incident Responder, to get their take on the challenges - and opportunities - that lie ahead.

The new wave of AI-powered threats

The days of poorly written phishing emails are over. Attackers are now leveraging AI to create sophisticated, highly convincing attacks that are difficult to spot.

Andreea highlights the immediate, tactical threat: “AI has become a game-changer in creating more realistic phishing attacks, including deepfakes and generated voice messages. These attacks often involve impersonating a high-ranking company official to convince victims to provide money or data.”

While Andreea's team handles the tactical response, the strategic challenge for leadership is immense.

Espen emphasizes the need for building resilience: “From a leadership perspective, the biggest new challenge AI poses is not a single issue, but rather the dynamic interplay between technology, human behavior, and organizational culture. It is the speed and scale at which AI can amplify existing vulnerabilities and create entirely new ones.”

When trust becomes a risk

One of the biggest risks comes from within, as many people embrace AI tools without a full understanding of the security implications.

“Funny story, we first encountered 'vibe coding' during our first incident related to it,” Andreea recalls. She explains that this AI-driven programming approach allows a developer to blindly generate code based on a description. “It’s crucial to recognize that the convenience of AI can sometimes come at the cost of something far more valuable: security.”

Using AI to defend

So, what does this all mean for the future? At Visma, we believe that security is a collective effort, and the same AI that powers new threats also provides us with more powerful tools for defense.

Andreea confirms the value of AI in defense: “AI and Machine Learning have significantly enhanced cybersecurity, demonstrating their utility over time. They excel at processing vast datasets and rapidly identifying correlations, a task far more efficient than human capabilities.”

Visma's proactive approach and commitment to excellence

As a leader in mission-critical business software, Visma recognizes its unique responsibility in this new era. Our commitment is rooted in a shared commitment to excellence and a strategy of constant adaptation.

A dedicated security ecosystem

Espen defines the value proposition of choosing Visma: “From my perspective, having a product from Visma means you're tapping into a mature and dedicated security ecosystem. You're not just buying a piece of software; you're gaining a partner that has invested heavily in a full security stack that's often out of reach for individual companies.”

Customers benefit from:

  • Secure by design and default: The product is built with security as a core principle from the start. This means security is "baked in," not just "bolted on."
  • Scale of investment: You gain access to security research, threat intelligence, and a dedicated team of experts far beyond what most could afford on their own.

Andreea details the proactive measures that happen behind the scenes: “We engage in numerous activities that often go unnoticed. These range from publishing awareness articles and continuously monitoring critical assets to executing more intricate tasks, such as developing our own internal tools and procedures to guarantee seamless operations.”

The purpose of Security Month

Espen explains the focus of the month: “In Visma we communicate about security every day of the year. In October, we focus our attention on what is important that specific year. This year we chose AI security as a focal point and attempt to share as much information and create engagement both inside and outside Visma.”

Some final advice

The future of security is already being shaped by AI and advanced threats. Espen points to the horizon: “Quantum computing is the most likely next big challenge. Visma works actively in this area.”

However, the most immediate danger is misusing the powerful tools available today.

Espen's advice on responsible use of AI: "Accept that these are just that: tools. Assess and consider what to use these tools for and what not to use them for. If the problem is a window you need to open, the hammer offers a solution, but maybe not the best solution."

Andreea's golden rule for individuals: "Exercise caution with AI tools. Before uploading documents for AI summarization, consider whether they contain sensitive information. Do not blindly accept AI outputs as fact. Always research and double-check information for accuracy, as this can be crucial."
